The Powerful Connection Between Mindset and Weight Loss

Whether you think you can or think you can’t—you’re right.”
~Henry Ford

If you’ve ever been on a weight loss journey, you know the importance of mindset.

As with any stretch goal, many factors go into achieving it—but if you don’t believe in yourself, you’re much more likely to get discouraged and even give up.

Limiting beliefs can sabotage our efforts before we even begin.

While the physical aspects of weight loss are critically important, a holistic approach to weight loss acknowledges that true transformation involves the body, mind, and spirit.

Let’s explore how mindset and weight loss are connected and consider some strategies for overcoming limiting beliefs that may be holding you back.

Limiting Beliefs Are Demotivating

Limiting beliefs are negative thoughts and assumptions about yourself. The negative voice in your head comes from many different sources, including childhood experiences, societal influences, internalized criticisms, and more.

It’s easy to pick up negativity from many places in a society that has a dysfunctional fixation on getting the “perfect” body.

It’s also understandable that while you’re trying to motivate yourself to follow a weight-loss program, you may have some internal resistance in the face of hard work.

Maybe you’re hearing some of these limiting beliefs flowing through your mind daily:

  • “I’ll never be able to lose weight.”
  • “I don’t have the willpower to stick to this diet.”
  • “I’ve always been overweight, and I always will be.”
  • “Healthy food is too expensive and time-consuming to prepare.”
  • “Exercise is too hard, and I hate doing it.”

The truth is, our brains are wired for the negative! So–step one is realizing that these thoughts are normal and natural and not to beat ourselves up for having them.

Next, we need to reprogram our brains to focus on the positives.

When you believe success is possible, you consciously set yourself up for success.

How Mindset Can Help You Lose Weight

A positive, growth-oriented mindset can help you overcome obstacles, stay motivated, and achieve lasting change.

On the flip side, a negative mindset can stubbornly stand in the way of progress.

So let’s look at some types of mindsets and how they can affect your behavior.

Fixed Mindset:

When you have a fixed mindset, you believe that your qualities and abilities are static and unchangeable. You might think, “I’m just not good at this,” or “I can’t control my cravings.” When you feel defeated, it can lead you to avoid things that are challenging because they make you feel even worse. When you’re stuck in this state of mind, you have a tendency to give up easily.

Growth Mindset:

When you believe that you’re capable of growing and changing through effort and perseverance, you vastly expand your capacity to reach your goals. You start to embrace challenges, learn from setbacks, and view hard work as a pathway to mastery. A growth mindset fosters resilience, a willingness to keep trying, and patience for when progress is slow.

Clearly, there are many compelling reasons to shift your mindset toward the positive—but how?

8 Steps to Developing a Positive Mindset

  1. Acknowledge your limiting beliefs. Most of us would rather do almost anything than look directly at our own negative thought patterns—but we need to start where we are. Take some time to reflect on your mindset related to weight loss. In a journal, write down any negative beliefs you notice—and consider where they may be coming from.
  2. Inspect your beliefs with curiosity. Are these things really true? Do you have examples of people who have overcome these challenges? Gather evidence that shows your initial assumptions are wrong. By challenging these, you may begin to feel your fixed mindset beginning to expand.
  3. Time for a reframe. Now you can actually turn your limiting beliefs on their heads and challenge them by imagining, “What if the opposite is true?” So, “I’ll never be able to lose weight” becomes “Little by little, I’m going to lose weight while I follow my positive mindset and weight loss plan.” Flipping the script allows you to see your limitations as possibilities.
  4. Give yourself some love. This isn’t an easy process and setbacks are unavoidable. You may be tempted to berate yourself for slip-ups—but this is precisely when you should give yourself some compassion. Think about how you’d talk to a friend in a similar situation. Maybe you didn’t stick to the plan—but this is always an opportunity for growth.
  5. Hold your vision. Visualization is a tool for changing your mindset. Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself at your desired weight. How does it feel? How do you look? How are people reacting to you? How has your life improved? By practicing this regularly and viscerally feeling what it will be like to succeed, your positive mindset will be strengthened and you’ll feel more motivated.
  6. Connect with a supportive community. You don’t have to go through this alone. Lots of people around you would welcome an accountability partner or someone to check in with about progress. Maybe you can find someone who wants to be a walking partner or gym buddy. You can also join support groups or seek out support from professionals like a therapist or health coach. Share with your loved ones—they’ll help you through the tougher times by cheering you on.
  7. Be sure your goals are realistic. You might be tempted to take on a goal that’s too far out of reach—but setting more conservative goals and celebrating every incremental win along the way is more motivating. As you hit your mid-stream goals, you’ll build your confidence and that’s precisely what you’re going to need!
  8. Build your capacity for patience and persistence. We’re wired for instant gratification in our society, but a weight loss journey will never bring it. Even when your progress seems slow, be extremely patient with yourself. If you’re consistent, even with smaller efforts, you’re much more likely to see significant results.
